Labubu: The ‘kind of ugly’ plush toy that has taken the world by storm
Labubu, a quirky, toothy collectible character from Pop Mart, has taken the world by storm. Originally designed by Kasing Lung, Labubu is part of The Monsters series and has gained immense popularity, particularly through blind box collectibles. This paper explores the rise of Labubu in international media, its impact on consumer culture, and the role of social media in its success
Labubu’s journey from a niche designer toy to a global sensation has been fueled by strategic marketing and celebrity endorsements. The character’s Nordic folklore-inspired design and unique aesthetic have attracted collectors worldwide.
Blind Box Appeal – Labubu is sold in blind boxes, meaning buyers don’t know which version they’ll get. This mystery element has driven demand and excitement.
Celebrity Influence – K-pop star Lisa from Blackpink has publicly expressed her love for Labubu, boosting its popularity.
International Expansion – Pop Mart has expanded beyond China, with stores in Thailand, Australia, and the U.S., making Labubu accessible to a global audience.
Labubu’s success is largely driven by social media trends. Platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and WeChat have fueled the hype through:
Unboxing Videos – Fans share their blind box openings, creating excitement and anticipation.
Resale Market – Limited-edition Labubu figures are resold for up to $90, far exceeding their original price.
Community Engagement – Online groups discuss new releases, trade figures, and share collecting tips.

Labubu has absolutely taken over TikTok and people are spending crazy amounts of money over these plush key chains. One of the biggest things that people are doing with their Labubu is buying custom outfits to dress up their Labubu. Videos are blowing up all over the world because of the way people are putting them on their bags and using them as accessories. At first, I did not understand the worldwide craze over these scary looking collectables but the more videos I watch on them the more I want one. Overall, I could really see these little keychains continuing to become an even bigger thing when Pop Mart releases a new series.
